Beyond the Classroom: 2025 Teacher Hero Leads Efforts to End Period Poverty

Teachers do more than teach: they inspire change in their communities.

The Gambia Teacher Prize 2025 National winner is doing just that through her efforts to address period poverty and support girls’ education. Through menstrual health awareness and the distribution of reusable sanitary pads, she is helping girls manage their periods with dignity and confidence while challenging the stigma that often surrounds menstruation.

The initiative was made possible through the generous support of Dan and Kim from the United States, delegates of the Gambia Teacher Prize. Their contribution reflects the spirit of the Prize, which goes beyond celebrating educators to fostering partnerships and connections that create lasting impact in communities.

At Namie Foundation, we believe the Gambia Teacher Prize is more than an awards programme. It is a platform that brings together educators, partners, supporters, and advocates who share a commitment to improving education and transforming lives. The support provided by Dan and Kim demonstrates how these relationships can translate into meaningful action long after the event has ended.

Through the donation of reusable sanitary pads, the initiative is helping girls remain in school with dignity while promoting open conversations around menstrual health.

“Menstruation is not a curse. It is not a source of shame. It is a sign of life, strength, and womanhood.”Angelic-2025 National Winner

By addressing period poverty, the 2025 National winner is helping to ensure that more girls have the opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive.
